Failure to manage the security risks of open source components could lead to more incidences like the recent Equifax data breach.  According to the results of a report published by Flexera this week more than half of current software products use open source components but less than 37 percent of those companies have any kind of open source usage policy.  Hackers stole data from Equifax by exploiting an Apache Struts CVE-2017-5638 vulnerability, a commonly used open source component.  Based on the results of their survey, Flexera warns there could be a lot more of these types of breaches in the months and years to come.  Open source components are a vital part of software development that allows for innovation and rapid ...

The worlds most technologically advanced cable is now lying 17,000 feet under the Atlantic Ocean. The Marea subsea cable runs 4,000 miles from Virginia Beach to Bilbao, Spain and can transmit up to 160 terabits of data per second. Microsoft and Facebook teamed up with infrastructure company Telxius to complete the project in less than 2 years.  According to Microsoft that's almost three times faster than an undertaking like this would normally last.  Connection issues caused by Hurricane Sandy made it clear that major connection hubs need to be spread out to more locations in order to prevent catastrophic network disruptions.  The cable is specifically designed to be interoperable with a wide variety of equipment, and to evol...

As part of it's plan to cut emissions in half by 2050 British Airways will start turning household waste into clean burning renewable jet fuel.  This will be a huge advance in biofuel production and could lead to the reduction in landfills across the world.  Maybe Doc Brown really did visit the future.

Early this morning users trying to get to wikileaks.org were redirected to a page created by OurMine claiming to have hacked the organization. But rather than actually hacking into the WikiLeaks servers it looks more like they just fooled the DNS servers into thinking wikileaks.org was housed somewhere else. This is an attack called "DNS poisoning" and while it isn't a literal security breach it is definitely problematic and points out the weaknesses of DNS protocol. The Cloud Native Computing Foundation announced this morning that Amazon Web Services has joined the group to work on "accelerating the development and deployment of cloud native technologies." This now means that all of the five largest cloud providers are members of of the CNCF. Cloud native computing involves using open source software to deploy applications and optimize resource utilization. The CNCF serves as a collaboration hub for developers, users and vendors.
